Keeping a record of your pressure canner gauge test

A pressure canner gauge test record keeps the date, the result as it was given, and who tested the gauge. Save it in your canning equipment log with the make and model it belongs to. Your local Extension office provides guidance about testing and interpreting the result.

In short

  • Keep the original card or slip with your notes if you received one.
  • Add new results to the history rather than replacing earlier entries.
  • Use the equipment name consistently so results stay with the right pressure canner.

A test slip is easy to put in a drawer and hard to find when you want it again. Keeping the result with your pressure canner’s details gives you a place to check without searching through last year’s paperwork.

That record can live in your canning equipment log, a page with the manual, or a digital record. Choose somewhere you’ll look when you take the equipment out.

What to keep with the result

Record the date the gauge was tested and the result, in the same words and form the tester gave you. If there’s a card or slip, keep the original with your notes.

Add the name of the office or person who carried out the test. Include the pressure canner’s make and model, or the name you use for it in your equipment log, so you can tell which result belongs to which piece of equipment.

Keep earlier entries

Add each new test beneath the previous entries, with its own date. You can then look back through the history instead of seeing only the most recent result.

For multiple pressure canners, keep a separate history for each. Use the same names when you record equipment in your batch log, so you can connect a batch with the equipment used that day.

Where to ask about testing

For guidance on testing or questions about a result, contact your local Cooperative Extension office. Find Extension in Your State, from the Extension Foundation lists the Extension service in each state and can help you find the service near you.

The log keeps the result as it was given; it doesn’t interpret it or supply testing instructions.

Where The Cantry keeps it

In The Cantry, the pressure canner’s equipment record holds its make and model, gauge type, last test date and the result you enter. When you log a batch, you can select the pressure canner from that list.

That keeps the equipment details with the records you already use, rather than leaving the result on a loose slip of paper.

How The Cantry does this

The Cantry is a digital canning notebook and inventory tracker. Add jars as you can them, subtract them as you use them, and always know what you have on hand.
